"Volume 6 of the Hornby Companion Series covers the history of the world-famous Meccano System from its inception in 1901 until the closure of the Liverpool factory in 1979. It traces, in a fully illustrated and narrative form, the struggles of the inventor, Frank Hornby, a Provisions Dealer's clerk, to establish a foothold in the toy market with a crude metal assembly kit at the beginning of the twentieth century. From that point on, the rise and fall of his Meccano empire is chronicled to the sad day when the famous Binns Road factory closed down in November.

In this volume, the narrative section is written by Bert Love, well-known to Meccano enthusiasts around the world for his illustrated books on Meccano Model Building and for his long-running articles in Meccano Magazine. Co-author Jim Gamble, curator of the Nottingham Meccano Collection, has played a major role in collating comprehensive historical Meccano data in the appendices to the book and in searching out the documents and records that confirm the authenticity of this story.
