WB53012 - Field Fortifications & Pioneer Tools, Set No.1

Military engineering is the oldest of the engineering arts and was the precursor of the profession of civil engineering. Construction of fortifications, roads, bridges, camouflaging positions, surveying, and mapping are the province of military engineers. Because they were in the vanguard of any military force these soldiers were called “pioneers.” Their main weapons were the pick, axe, and shovel. Pictured in this grouping are four wicker gabions filled with earth and rock. The empty, pre-woven cylinders were light and would be carried in the ammunition train to be brought up to the front lines where the engineers would fill them, creating protection for siege guns and forward troops.
